LATEX CAP

PROS

  • Latex caps are more affordable than Silicone caps
  • If you have little or no hair, a latex cap will provide a better fit
  • It is easy to stretch Latex. It can fit on most
  • Lightweight
  • Keeps hair out of pool filters
  • The Latex cap is sometimes used for "Double Capping", this is where the swimmer wears two caps with his goggle strap inbetween.  This allows maximum streamlining in the water and in open water offers extra warmth

CONS

  • When fitting the latex cap it is prone to ‘grab’ long hair
  • The cap can rip or puncture if it comes into contact with sharp objects such as hair clips or finger nails
  • Not as long lasting as silicone
  • Caring for your cap is essential. Lack of care will result in your cap becoming sticky if left in the sun or mouldy if not rinsed with cool tap water. Drying and powdering your cap will keep it in good shape

SILCONE CAP

PROS

  • Contoured fit
  • Durable, longer lasting and more tear resistant than latex
  • More insulation and floatation than latex
  • Easier to place on the head if you have long hair
  • Keeps hair out of pool filters
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Silicone caps are Ideal for regular swimmers who are training for squad or fitness

CONS

  • The cap can rip or puncture if it comes into contact with sharp objects such as hair clips or finger nails
  • Is more expensive

LYCRA CAP

PROS

  • Helps keep hair out of your eyes. The Lycra cap doesn’t have the tight, heat-retaining fit of traditional swim caps
  • Often used for water exercising such as water aerobics
  • Great for young children who might not like the tighter caps
  • Keeps hair out of pool filters
  • Made out of the same fabric as swimsuits, so can give you a more uniform look

CONS

  • Not efficient for lap swimming
  • The fabric is completely porous so your hair will get completely wet when lap swimming

NEOPRENE CAPS

  • Often used in triathlon and open water swimming. Designed to keep your head warm when swimming in cold conditions.
  • The cap lets some water in, which in turn heats up and insulates you.
  • Neoprene swimcaps are not allowed in certain events such as the English Channel Swims
